Special Group Types

There are several different types of group for different situations. Mostly these are for things behind the scenes, but a couple are worth mentioning specifically:

Tutorial Groups

Tutorial groups are what set the relationship between staff and students as being a tutorial relationship. If a student is in a tutorial group for a member of staff, then that member of staff is able to see their whole Journal.

Staff members have a special list of their tutorial groups in their "You" page.

Module Groups

With version 4 of CAGD, we're trying to have specific Module groups to take care of the more formal teaching sides of things. In the past, staff would create folders within Level groups to hold stuff relating specifically to modules, but that caused problems when students on different courses shared modules.

The Module groups exist outside of the courses and levels within the main group hierarchy. In fact, rather than modules being within levels, levels are actually within modules. That way we can put two levels from completely different courses (or in some cases, undergraduate and postgraduate courses) without messing up who is studying what course.

One downside of this is that we haven't yet been able to get the permissions that staff have on a course to cascade up to the modules, so in order to be able to create folders and move people around we're having to make sure that all staff are listed within the modules that they teach on.
